    Dr Catherine Raines was appointed CEO of Association of Foreign Banks, to take up the role with effect from 31st December 2018.

    She has extensive experience in international business and government, including periods spent living and working in the UK, the USA, Sweden and China (twice). She has spent twenty five years in the private sector, mostly in global Pharma: with roles as diverse as Head of Group Corporate Audit; Director of International Assets Strategy; Director of Global Supply; and VP Corporate Development China for AstraZeneca, based in Shanghai.

    More recently, she has worked in government. In 2013 she was appointed by then Prime Minister David Cameron to lead the government’s trade efforts in China, based out of Beijing. With staff and partners (mostly Chinese nationals) located across 15 Chinese cities, she grew a twelve-fold increase in trade outcomes and led on all commercial aspects of bilateral economic and trade dialogues. Subsequently, she was appointed global CEO of UK Trade and Investment, leading 2700 staff across 108 countries - and working with countless partners and stakeholders in the UK and overseas to deliver the complex global trade delivery agenda. She conceived and delivered the world-first digital trade platform great.gov.uk offering real-time live export opportunities to British businesses. In the wake of the Referendum decision to leave the EU, she became a founder member of the Board of the newly created Department for International Trade in preparation for Brexit. She also sat on the Boards of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and UK Export Finance.

    Catherine has held a number of executive and non-executive directorships in the public, private and charitable sectors. She is passionate about inclusion in the workplace and set the Department of International Trade on its path to Stonewall Top 100 accreditation. In 2017 she was awarded an honorary doctorate from Keele university for her contribution to international trade and her commitment to diversity in all its forms.

    Bruk Woldegabreil has been a Director at the Association of Foreign Banks since the beginning of 2014. He is the Head of the Association’s Policy team and work which covers the AFB panels, briefings, workshops, seminars, publications and networking evenings for the benefit of AFB member banks.

    Before joining the AFB, he was Head of the Account Switching Service at Metro Bank, a role which he took on in 2013. His main responsibility was to lead the delivery of the Current Account Switching Service for the bank and manage the growth of its current account and ISA customer base.

    Prior to this, he spent several years at Lloyds Banking Group (LBG) across roles within Corporate Banking, Retail, Operations and Group Functions. Having joined Lloyds TSB, Bruk has been involved in a number of material bank projects, including: development of a Digital Banking Compliance & Risk Framework; regulatory reporting of LBG’s PPI Remediation Programme; relationship management with UK Government bodies during the recent financial crisis; various retail-based propositions across lending, current accounts and fraud prevention; wholesale banking credit policy and risk management in the UK and USA.

    Bruk is also a Freeman and member of the Worshipful Company of International Bankers.

    Before this, he read Economics (BSc) and Finance & Development (MSc) at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.

    James joined the AFB in July 2015. As part of the AFB’s Policy Team, James focuses on a number of areas including Brexit, Risk, and Financial Crime in respect of the foreign banking sector. This includes engagements with key stakeholders such as HM Treasury, the FCA and the Bank of England, amongst others, while also helping to keep AFB members informed of key issues through the discussion forums covering his areas of focus.
