AFB Sponsored Roundtable: Tackling the Challenges of Fee and Income Recognition

AFB members are invited to an in-person roundtable discussion on fee and interest income recognition by banks. This roundtable, sponsored by Whistlebrook, will consider the challenges associated with the calculation of an Effective Interest Rate (EIR) and income recognition under IFRS 9 and FRS102 and how this can be improved by the adoption of software systems.

This is a critical area of compliance and financial reporting for banks. As institutions face growing scrutiny from auditors as well as regulators, the use of spreadsheet-based models for the calculation of EIR and recognition of income & costs is increasingly seen as creating operational risk. For complex loan structures, stepped rates and early repayments, the need for scalable, auditable systems is more important than ever.

We are grateful to AFB member firm, UBL Bank UK, for hosting this roundtable.

Why attend?

Join senior finance and reporting professionals to exchange insights, compare approaches, and discuss emerging solutions in a confidential, peer-led format addressing real-world challenges in EIR application. The roundtable will cover the following key areas:

  • An understanding of why EIR calculations are critical to recognising interest income appropriately
  • Consideration of how future economic volatility (e.g. interest rate shocks, credit conditions) could impact EIR calculation models
  • Guidance on how to determine the expected behaviour of customers — including in relation to prepayment rates, early redemptions, and fee amortisation
  • Awareness of the complexity of accounting, how errors can arise, and where controls are most needed
  • Exploration of how EIR adjustments and timing differences could impact profit recognition in PRA stress testing scenarios
  • Examples of how financial institutions are addressing these challenges with dedicated systems and improved governance

AFB will circulate an agenda to attendees in advance, provided by Whistlebrook, which will be used to aid discussions.

The Chatham House Rule will apply to this event to encourage open dialogue and discussion.

There will be refreshments and networking from 15:30 before the roundtable discussion commences at 16:00.  There will be refreshments and networking after the discussion from 17:30 to 18:30.

Please note there will be a limit of one representative from each AFB member to allow a wider range of firms to attend and benefit from the discussion.
