AFB Practice Roundtable: Global AI Deployments and Local Regulatory Compliance – Key Challenges for International Banks

AI is being deployed at pace across global banking groups, from credit decisions and fraud detection to customer communications and operational automation. This presents international banks with a distinctive and pressing challenge: how do firms facilitate the scaling of AI whilst addressing the approaches being taken by different regulatory regimes?

This roundtable, in partnership with TLT LLP, is designed to give legal and compliance professionals a practical framework for navigating this challenge. The session will focus on the key regulatory areas non-UK headquartered banks should consider when implementing AI systems. In particular, it will focus on the differences between the UK and EU regulatory approaches.

Why attend?

Technology mandates are often set by group headquarters based outside the UK.  This can make it difficult for the UK-based offices to implement in a way that meets the local legal and regulatory obligations. Firms must consider the governance structures and contractual protections they need to have in place, as well as how to engage constructively with group headquarters to promote innovation without compromising local compliance.

The roundtable will discuss the key areas below:

  • the evolving UK and EU regulatory landscape for AI and its implications for international banking groups
  • the implementation of global AI initiatives within local legal and regulatory requirements
  • governance frameworks and oversight structures for AI systems deployed across jurisdictions
  • contractual protections and risk allocation considerations when adopting group-wide AI solutions
  • practical approaches for engaging with global headquarters to support innovation while maintaining compliance
  • lessons learned and peer discussion on managing AI governance within complex international organisations

AFB will circulate an agenda and a series of questions to attendees in advance, which will be used to aid the discussion.

The Chatham House Rule will apply to this event to encourage open dialogue and discussion.

Please note that there will be a limit of one representative per AFB member to allow a wider range of firms to attend and benefit from the discussion.

Who should attend?

This Practice Roundtable will be particularly relevant for Legal and Compliance professionals, including those with responsibility for data protection and technology governance.
